Cochlear implantation in India new hope for people suffering from deafness

All of us know that ears are the main source that provides sound to our mind. It plays a vital role in the hearing and consists of three parts that includes an external ear, middle ear, and inner ear. But sometimes, due to the diseases in the external and internal ear, the person suffers from serious complications that lead to deafness.

Deafness is categorized in two parts which includes:

·         Conductive Deafness- In the conductive deafness, external ear got trapped with the severe diseases. This type of deafness can only be corrected with the help of surgery and medical treatment.

·         Sensorineutral Deafness- Sensorineutral impairment occurs if there is an inner ear problem. This type of hearing deafness cannot be corrected with medicines.

Cochlear implant is the only treatment option when there is two-sided severe or profound Sensorineutral hearing loss. Moreover, it is also used when there is no benefit with hearing aids.

Prof. William House from House Ear Institute first described the successful outcome from a single channel 3-M House Implantation in the year 196, USA. The implantation helped in making a deaf patient able to perceive sound as well as improve lip-reading ability.

A cochlear implantation has gained immense popularity in the last few decades. It is an electronic device that restores partial hearing to the properly selected deaf. It is implanted in the inner ear and activated by a device worn at the back of the ear. It is much more different and advanced than the traditional hearing aids.

India is a country that offers low cost cochlear implantation. The cochlear implantation in India is now an established and recognized method of therapy for deafness in children and adults. The procedure of cochlear implantation in India is much advanced than the hearing aids. Currently, cochlear implant is the only hope for deaf patients for developing and learning linguistic ability for communication.
