New
Delhi, 23 Dec. 13- Azoospermia is the medical
condition of
a man of not having any measurable level of sperm in his semen. It
is generally related to the very low levels of fertility or even sterility. In
humans, Azoospermia affects about 1% of the male population and may be seen in
up to 20% of male infertility situations. Azoospermia can arise for two reasons.
Obstructive Azoospermia is caused by a blockage that prevents otherwise
plentiful, fit sperm produced in the testes from reaching the ejaculate. Recent
study indicated that the vast majority suffered from the non-obstructive
variety. Because of genetic deficiencies of one sort or another, their testes
didn’t capable to produce enough sperm to reach their ejaculate.
The Azoospermia is generally classified
into three main divisions which include Pretesticular Azoospermia, Testicular Azoospermia, Posttesticular Azoospermia, and Idiopathic Azoospermia. The Pretesticular Azoospermia is seen in about 2% of
Azoospermia. Pretesticular Azoospermia is mainly characterized by inadequate
stimulation of the genital tract and the normal testicles. Basically in these
cases follicle-stimulating
hormone levels are low commensurate with inadequate stimulation of the testes to
produce the sperm. Examples include hypopituitarism, hyperprolactinemia, and exogenous FSH
suppression by testosterone.
